Way to Go!: Bryan Antico of Smithtown February 8, 2010 By MICHAEL R. EBERT Newsday michael.ebert@newsday.com
Bryan Antico knows a thing or two about volunteering. A junior at Smithtown High School West, he has spent the past year helping to run Friday and Saturday bingo nights at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center in Smithtown.
He mingles with vision- and hearing-impaired senior citizens and helps them keep track of their bingo cards.
"Students like Bryan offer some socialization and companionship to our residents. It's important for them to retain that intergenerational contact," said Heather Reynolds, center director of therapeutic recreation.
And that's just the start of Antico's volunteer efforts. He also serves holiday meals to homeless children in Sayville, collects and donates gently used clothes to local churches and veterans groups, and does paperwork for Korea-Cold War Families of the Missing, a family advocacy organization.
"There's always people my age that ask me what's the point of community service," said Antico, 16. "For me, a simple thank-you is enough."
He credits his mother, Diane, with instilling the value of volunteering in him at an early age.
He is part of his school DECA and Students Against Destructive Decisions clubs.

Dear PTA Members and Friends:
This message is being sent to you on behalf of National PTA: We have a serious situation requiring a major call-to-action. President Obama's new budget proposes to consolidate and eliminate the Parental Information and Resource Centers (PIRCs). Consolidation of the PIRCs will eliminate the only federal program dedicated to family engagement, which serves 16.4 million parents. The proposed FY11 budget would eliminate 62 PIRCs impacting every state and territory. [read more]

The Environmental Protection Agency and the US Surgeon General recommend that all homes in the U>S> be teted for Radon. For more information you can call the National Radon Information Line at 800-SOS-RADON or visit www.epa.gov/radon or www.radon.com. Radon is a cancer-causing radioactive gas. You cannot see, smell or taste radon, but it may be a problem in your home. The Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. If you smoke and your home has high radon levels, you're at high risk for developing lung cancer. Some scientific studies of radon exposure indicate that children may be more sensitive to radon. This may be due to their higher respiration rate and their rapidly dividing cells, which may be more vulnerable to radiation damage.

Deana Godek Independent Chocolatier - Team Leader Dove Chocolate Discoveries Website
Deana Godek became a Chocolatier with DOVE CHOCOLATE DISCOVERIESÔ in early July 2009. A stay-at-mom of three young children—Dakota (9), Kayla (5) and Tristan (1 year)—she was first introduced to the opportunity on a mom’s discussion board online. After seeing an ad in Real Simple magazine shortly thereafter and participating in one of the company’s Opportunity Calls, she decided to sign up.
“I was attracted to the social nature of being a Chocolatier," as an avid chocolate maker and baker, the idea of connecting with women in social situations and watching their faces light up as she serves Chocolate Martinis and samples of products, such as the company’s famous brownies and mousse mix, was a big motivator in joining the company. Upon signing up and buying her Starter Kit of $149, she got to work and has been hosting an average of two parties per week and currently has a team of ten Chocolatiers working with her.
As for the money she earns, she says she saves it for her family. “Becoming a Chocolatier meant that my husband, John, didn’t need to get a second job,” she enthuses. Not wanting her husband to be away from their family and being able to say “yes” more often to her kids makes it all worthwhile. “We feel better as a family,” that makes her smile.
With only 1900 Chocolatiers nationwide, this is still a very ground-floor opportunity with tremendous earning potential. If you, or anyone else you know would like to become a Chocolatier, please contact Deana for more information.
