thought for the day
Meditate

Perhaps children are the happiest people on the planet because they have not learned what they cannot do. They have not been taught to fear and judge and hate, and they have no concept that they must justify their existence by hard work. Lord, please keep me ignorant, so I may remember my innocence and see the world as You created it.

Session Will Focus on Holistic Methods To Overcome “Stimming” in Children with Autism

New Life ChriropracticSmithtown, NY (March 23, 2010) – Smithtown Chiropractic Neurologist and Defeat Autism Now!® Practitioner Dr. Keri Chiappino has been selected to host a workshop for parents seeking holistic healing therapies for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) at the Long Island Autism Fair.  Now in its fourth year, the Fair will be held Sunday, April 18, 2010 at Farmingdale State University.

Dr. Chiappino’s session runs from 11:30am-12:30pm and will focus on repetitive behaviors frequently used by children with autism, commonly referred to as “stimming.”  Entitled “Spinning, Stimming, and Swaying: Understanding the Neurological Mechanism Behind These Behaviors and Developing Strategies to Overcome Them Through Fuel and Activation", this informative lecture will help parents better understand why their child adopts specific ritualistic behaviors and offer helpful tools to better manage their child’s symptoms.

According to Dr. Chiappino, “Repetitive body movements are utilized by children with autism to reduce external stress and to refocus when their sensory world becomes overwhelming. While stimming produces a calming effect on the child, it can be disruptive, becoming an obsessive ritual that interferes with socialization and the ability to learn.   Neurological exercises can improve connections in the brain and thus reduce rocking, hand flappAutism
