Meditate

"Life is either resistance or surrender. These are the only choices. Resistance leads to suffering. Surrender leads to bliss. Resistance is the decision to act alone. Surrender is the decision to act with God."

Over the Summer Reminders!

INCOMING 7TH GRADE - NYS requires all 7th graders to submit a PHYSICAL by November 15th.  Also a separate DENTAL CERTIFICATE is requested.  All forms are available on the districts web site.

 CALLING ALL CHEER COACHES!

The Smithtown Youth Football & Cheerleading League  is looking for cheerleading coaches for the 2010 cheer season.  The season runs from mid July through November.  We are looking for dedicated and responsible teenagers to teach cheerleading to Smithtown's young girls ranging in age from kindergarten through 8th grade.  You must be in at least the 9th grade to be a head coach or in the 7th grade or 8th grade to be a junior coach.  If you are looking for ways to earn community service and/or leadership hours or if you are just looking for something fun to do, we are sure this will be a rewarding experience!  You will be given a "coach" SYF t-shirt and a name-embroidered SYF sweatshirt and will be invited to our annual cheer breakfast at the conclusion of the season at no cost to you.

Practices will begin in late July and are held outside at Great Hollow on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings through the beginning of school.  After school starts in September, practices are brought indoors one night per week at one of our Smithtown schools (Great Hollow Middle School, Smithtown High School East and possibly one of the elementary schools) on EITHER Tuesday or Thursday night (day to be determined and we will try to accomodate your schedule).  You will also be responsible for attending SYF football games on Sundays to lead the young cheerleaders on the sidelines.  The SYF football games are held at the Armory (football fields located in Nesconset on Smithtown Boulevard).  Times will be determined when the football schedule is posted.

An annual cheer exhibition for all SYF cheerleaders is held in the beginning of November.  You will be responsible for originating a cheer routine and teaching that routine to the cheerleaders to perform at the Exhibition.  The routine should include part cheer, part dance and part stunts (depending on age group).  There are no time constraints, but the routines are generally 2 1/2 to 4 minutes long.  You will also be responsible for the music for your routine and the music must be submitted for approval by the Cheer Committee on a CD by the first week of school.  It is important to try to manage your time at practices ... the season passes quickly!

If you are interested in coaching, or if you know anyone who would be interested, please e-maildcanale524@aol.com as soon as possible.  We will be holding a coach meeting in July at which time your squad will be assigned.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you!

EMERGENCY CLOSING PROCEDURES:
In preparation for the upcoming school year, parents and students should familiarize themselves with emergency school procedures. The following radio and television stations have agreed to broadcast news about emergency school closings:

 District’s Website: www.smithtown.k12.ny.us
 WALK (1370 AM, 97.5 FM)
 WBLI (106.1 FM)
 News 12 - Channel 12

If there is any doubt about school being open or closed, listen to these radio stations or watch Channel 12. Residents are requested not to telephone the school office when weather is bad. Too many calls tie up vital phone lines, making it much more difficult to keep everything running smoothly.

Smithtown also has "delayed opening" and "early dismissal" procedures.

When it appears that the weather will improve early enough, the school district will institute its "delayed opening" procedure. The radio stations will be notified, and bus and opening time schedules will be delayed from one to two hours, depending upon the individual situation. Dismissal will remain the same when possible.

If inclement weather makes it necessary to dismiss students early, the radio and television stations will be notified, and the district Connect-ED automated calling system will be activated.
